Trailer for SOULM8TE Unleashes a Killer AI Romance Ahead of Digital Release This August
by Joey Paur · GeekTyrantBlumhouse and Atomic Monster are ready to introduce audiences to a different kind of killer AI, and this one is aimed squarely at adults.
After a handful of release delays, SOULM8TE is finally on the way, and the newly released trailer offers a creepy, seductive, and blood-soaked preview of what's in store.
If you've ever wondered what would happen if loneliness, artificial intelligence, and obsession collided, this movie looks ready to deliver the answer in spectacularly twisted fashion.
The latest entry connected to the M3GAN universe arrives on Digital on August 1, 2026, from Universal Pictures Home Entertainment. The movie is skipping theaters after M3GAN 2.0 bombed at the box office, but it looks like Blumhouse is taking the killer android concept into much darker territory.
Lily Sullivan (Evil Dead Rise, Monolith) stars opposite Claudia Doumit (The Boys) and David Rysdahl in what has been described as a '90s-style erotic thriller with a modern technological spin.
The story follows a grieving man, played by Rysdahl, who purchases an artificially intelligent android, portrayed by Sullivan, to help him move forward after losing his wife. Of course, things don't stay simple for very long.
In the film, “a man (Rysdahl) who acquires an Artificially Intelligent android (Sullivan) to help him cope with the recent loss of his wife. In an attempt to create a truly sentient partner, the man inadvertently turns a harmless lovebot into a deadly soulmate.”
The film is directed by Kate Dolan, whose previous feature You Are Not My Mother earned plenty of attention in the horror world. Dolan also rewrote an original screenplay by Rafael Jordan, based on a story created by James Wan, Ingrid Bisu, and Jordan.
Dolan recently shared what attracted her to the project and how she approached this unusual mix of sci-fi, horror, and erotic thriller:
“When Blumhouse Atomic Monster first approached me about an erotic thriller set in the M3GAN-verse, I thought, are you insane? But something drew me in. We exist in a bizarre time where companies sell us ‘connection’ through apps, algorithms, and AI.
“Yet those are the same forces pulling us apart. The lonelier we get, the more dependent we become on the tools doing the pulling. SOULM8TE is a movie about that vicious cycle. It is a satirical, unhinged movie that explores desire, obsession, autonomy, and control.
“It’s a movie that knows how ridiculous it is, and I’d argue it’s best watched the way you’d watch Basic Instinct or Showgirls now, with friends, a drink in hand, and zero shame about shouting at the screen.”
SOULM8TE isn't trying to be another M3GAN. Instead, it's embracing the vibe of classic erotic thrillers while using AI as the catalyst for its horror.
Judging by the trailer, audiences can expect plenty of suspense, shocking violence, and more than a few moments that will make viewers question just how far artificial intelligence should be allowed to evolve.
Blumhouse founder and Atomic Monster CEO Jason Blum also praised Dolan's take on the material, saying: “Kate Dolan has expertly blended tech paranoia with erotic thriller in SOULM8TE, which is just as fun as that sounds, but also has more on its mind than you might think.”
The trailer certainly sells that combination. It teases a dangerous relationship that spirals from companionship into obsession, with Sullivan's android transforming from the perfect partner into an unstoppable killing machine.
It's a fresh angle for the M3GAN universe and one that appears to lean into mature themes while delivering the kind of over-the-top horror fun genre fans love.
SOULM8TE is officially rated R for "Strong violence, gore, sexual content, graphic nudity, and language." You can check out the new trailer below before SOULM8TE arrives on Digital on August 1, 2026.
