Taylor Sheridan’s CALL OF DUTY Movie Will Officially Be Set in the MODERN WARFARE Universe

Fans have been wondering exactly which corner of the Call of Duty franchise would make the jump to the big screen, and now we have an answer.

The upcoming Call of Duty movie from Paramount Pictures, written by Taylor Sheridan, will officially take place in the fan favorite Modern Warfare universe.

That reveal came straight from director and co-writer Peter Berg, who shared the news during the Call of Duty in Culture Panel at Fanatics Fest in New York City while promoting the upcoming release of Modern Warfare 4.

Ever since the film was announced in September 2025, Paramount has kept story details tightly under wraps.

While Berg didn’t dive into the plot, confirming the setting is enough to get longtime Call of Duty fans excited about what could be headed to theaters.

The choice makes a lot of sense. Since launching in 2003, the Call of Duty franchise has grown into one of the biggest gaming series ever made, with more than 30 mainline entries.

While the early games focused on World War II, everything changed in 2007 with Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare. The series shifted into modern military combat and introduced players to one of gaming’s most iconic characters, Captain John Price.

The Modern Warfare saga has primarily taken place across the Middle East, following Price and the elite soldiers of Task Force 141 as they battle the ruthless terrorist Vladimir Makarov.

The storyline is set to continue this fall with Modern Warfare 4, which raises the stakes even further by centering on a war between North and South Korea.

That world seems like the perfect foundation for a feature film, especially with Sheridan writing the screenplay.

He’s built a reputation for delivering grounded, character-driven stories filled with tension, making him an intriguing choice to adapt one of gaming’s biggest action franchises.

The untitled Call of Duty movie is currently scheduled to hit theaters on June 30, 2028, with Paramount Pictures producing the film alongside Activision.

This movie could also be just the beginning. When the partnership between Paramount and Activision was first announced following Skydance’s acquisition of Paramount, it was reported that the agreement extends beyond a single film.

While the immediate focus is getting Sheridan’s movie made, the multi-year deal leaves the door wide open for a much larger Call of Duty cinematic universe spanning both film and television.

That shouldn’t come as much of a surprise. With decades of games, great characters, and multiple storylines ranging from historical warfare to futuristic conflicts, Call of Duty has plenty of material that could support an interconnected franchise if the first movie connects with audiences.

For now, though, all eyes are on Modern Warfare. If Captain Price and Task Force 141 are indeed leading the charge onto the big screen, fans could finally get the gritty, high-stakes military action they’ve wanted from a Call of Duty adaptation for years.

We’ll have to wait a while to see exactly what Sheridan and Berg have planned, but I’m excited to see what they deliver!
