Animated JOHN WICK Movie Greenlit with Keanu Reeves Returning to Tell the Story of the Impossible Task
by Joey Paur · GeekTyrantJohn Wick is heading into the world of animation, and we're finally going to see one of the most legendary chapters of his bloody career play out. Lionsgate has officially greenlit its upcoming animated John Wickmovie, with Keanu Reevessigning on to reprise his role as the badass assassin.
The film will take us back to the events before the original John Wick, exploring the infamous Impossible Task that allowed Wick to walk away from his life as a killer and build a future with his wife, Helen.
Fans have heard about this seemingly impossible mission throughout the franchise, but we've never actually seen what Wick had to do to pull it off. Now we'll finally get that story, and animation could be the perfect way to tell it.
Emmy Award-winning filmmaker Shannon Tindle, whose credits include Ultraman: Rising and Kubo and the Two Strings, is directing the project from a screenplay by Ryan Firpo and Kaz Firpo.
The film also brings back the franchise's core creative team, including Thunder Road producers Basil Iwanyk and Erica Lee, 87Eleven Entertainment's Chad Stahelski, and Reeves himself. They'll be joined by Point Grey, adding another experienced animation production company to the mix.
The story will follow Wick as he attempts to complete the Impossible Task to free himself from his obligations to the High Table. It's the mission that ultimately earns him the chance to leave the assassin world behind and spend his life with Helen.
What's especially exciting about this project is the creative freedom that animation offers. The live-action John Wick movies have already delivered some incredible action sequences, but an animated film could take that violence, choreography, and visual style in directions that would be difficult to pull off in live action.
I'm really hoping Tindle and his team go all out with the animation and artwork. I want to see something visually stunning that feels completely unique while still capturing everything that makes John Wick so awesome.
There's an opportunity here to experiment with different animation techniques, striking character designs, and imaginative action sequences that make the film stand apart from the live-action franchise. It would be great to see the filmmakers take some real creative chances with both the storytelling and visual presentation.
The Impossible Task also gives the creative team an interesting story to work with. We know Wick survives and eventually gets his freedom, but we have no idea what the mission actually involves or how much it costs him to complete it. That's a pretty great foundation for an action-packed prequel.
Having Reeves return to voice the character is another major plus. His involvement should help maintain that connection to the movies, especially with Stahelski and the original producing team helping guide the project.
If everything comes together, this could be an incredible addition to the John Wick franchise. I just hope the filmmakers take full advantage of the animated format and deliver something with its own artistic identity rather than simply trying to recreate the live-action movies.
There's so much potential here for a seriously cool animated action film, and I can't wait to see what Tindle and his team come up with.
