THE FURTHER MIS-ADVENTURES OF CLIFF BOOTH Trailer Throws Brad Pitt into 1977 Hollywood Chaos

Brad Pitt’s Cliff Booth is back, and Hollywood looks even crazier than the last time we saw him. Netflix has released a new trailer for The Further Mis-Adventures of Cliff Booth, which brings Brad Pitt back to his Oscar-winning role from Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.

This time, however, David Fincher is directing, and the story jumps ahead to 1977 for another wild ride through Los Angeles.

The film takes place eight years after Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, and Cliff has moved on from working as a stuntman. He’s now operating as a “studio fixer,” which seems like a pretty perfect job for a guy who can handle just about any messy situation Hollywood throws at him.

The trailer certainly gives him plenty to deal with. It opens with Cliff causing trouble at the Beverly Cinema, the theater Tarantino has owned since 2007, before diving into mud wrestling, murder, car chases, and plenty of questionable behavior.

At one point, Elizabeth Debicki’s character brings up Cliff’s former career as Rick Dalton’s stunt double. “You worked with Rick Dalton for a number of years. What brought an end to your engagement?” she asks. “Oh, Rick got too fat for me to double him anymore,” Cliff replies.

Leonardo DiCaprio isn’t returning as Rick Dalton, but Timothy Olyphant will be back as James Stacy. The cast also includes Scott Caan, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Carla Gugino, Holt McCallany, and JB Tadena as new characters.

One of the most interesting things about this project is seeing Fincher play around in a world created by Tarantino. Tarantino wrote the screenplay but chose not to direct it, something he previously discussed, saying:

“I love this script, but I’m still walking down the same ground I’ve already walked. It just kind of unenthused me. This last movie, I’ve got to not know what I’m doing again. I’ve got to be in uncharted territory.”

Tarantino has long said that his 10th feature film will be his final movie, with Once Upon a Time in Hollywood counting as his ninth. Rather than use that last slot to revisit Cliff Booth, he handed the script over to a filmmaker he clearly respects.

“I think me and David Fincher are the two best directors. So the idea that David Fincher actually wants to adapt my work, to me, shows a level of seriousness towards my work that I think needs to be taken into account.”

Fincher taking on a Tarantino script starring Pitt is already enough to get me excited, but the trailer makes The Further Mis-Adventures of Cliff Booth look like a great time. Pitt slips right back into Cliff’s laid-back, dangerous personality, while the 1977 Hollywood setting gives Fincher plenty of room to put his own visual stamp on this strange corner of the industry.

I’m very excited to see how Fincher handles Tarantino’s material. The combination of these filmmakers could have easily felt like an odd match, but based on this trailer, it looks great!

Cliff Booth remains one of Pitt’s most entertaining characters, and throwing him into the business of cleaning up Hollywood’s problems in the late ’70s is a fun and interesting way to continue his story.

The Further Mis-Adventures of Cliff Booth will premiere in IMAX theaters on November 25 before arriving on Netflix on December 23.
