Simon Kinberg's STAR WARS Trilogy is Moving Forward "Fast and Furiously" According To Kathleen Kennedy
by Joey Paur · GeekTyrantSimon Kinberg is leading the charge on a new Star Wars trilogy that’s in development at Lucasfilm. It was previously reported that Kinberg was developing three films, but now Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy has confirmed that these films will mark next chapter in the franchise’s ongoing legacy.
For decades, fans have followed the Star Wars saga through three major trilogies that include the originals, the prequels, and the sequels. While spin-offs, TV series, and video games have expanded the universe, the core storyline has remained within those nine films, collectively known as the Skywalker Saga.
But just because The Rise of Skywalker was marketed as the “end” doesn’t mean Star Wars is done telling big-screen stories in its main continuity.
Kennedy told Deadline: “This is the next iteration, the new saga that moves us into the future,” making it clear that Kinberg’s trilogy is a new saga and the next evolution of Star Wars.
According to Kennedy, things are moving fast on the new trilogy, and we might get a clearer picture as soon as June. She explained:
“We’re absolutely rolling fast and furiously. That has gone exceptionally well, and he’s literally going to script as we speak. We’ll see something probably around June. Simon, if you remember, he did some work with us years ago with the animated show, which was a really wonderful collaborative experience.
“And he then got very, very busy with X-Men and then recently became available again, and he segued into this space beautifully. We’re really excited about where that’s headed.”
While Kennedy didn’t specify when these films will take place in the timeline, it was previously reported that “Lucasfilm has disputed the notion that Kingberg’s movies will continue the story that George Lucas began with 1977’s A New Hope and continued with eight sequels.”
So, this new trilogy is most likely not connected with the Rey Skywalker project that is being directed by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy.
Kinberg played a significant role in developing Star Wars Rebels, and his work there, along with his extensive film experience (including the X-Men franchise), Lucasfilm obvioulsy belives he is a strong choice to craft a new era of Star Wars movies.
No story details have been revealed, and no official timeline has been confirmed. However, it’s clear that whatever Kinberg is working on will be a major pillar of Star Wars moving forward.
Jon Favreau is currently directing the Star Wars film with The Mandalorian & Grogu, which is a continuation of the Disney+ series and that’s set to be released on May 22, 2026.
