KANSAS CITY: Argentina booked their place in the World Cup semi-finals after edging Switzerland 3-1 following extra time, with Julian Alvarez striking the decisive goal in a tense quarter-final on Saturday.

Alexis Mac Allister scored the defending champions' opener on 10 minutes, but Switzerland slowly got into the game and Dan Ndoye finished off a well-worked move to bring them level midway through the second half.

The Swiss took a blow, though, when forward Breel Embolo was sent off for simulation on 72 minutes.

Alvarez curled from long distance to give Argentina the lead, before Lautaro Martinez made the victory certain.

Argentina will next face England in the semi-final on Thursday at the Atlanta Stadium.
