The Nigerian military has said it deployed a company of soldiers to the Republic of Benin in April 2026 during the country’s electioneering period and presidential inauguration.

This was disclosed in a statement issued on Monday by the Acting Director of Army Public Relations, Colonel Appolonia Anele, saying the deployment was approved by President Bola Tinubu.

“The Nigerian Army (NA), acting on the directive of the President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces o Federal Republic of Nigeria, His Excellecy, Bola Ahmed Tinubu deployed a company of troops to the Republic of Benin in April 2026 as part of proactive measures to safeguard democratic stability and forestall any breakdown of law and order during the country’s electioneering period,” Anele said.

Anele said the troops were deployed as part of efforts to prevent any breakdown of law and order and ensure democratic stability in the neighbouring West African country.

She explained that although the troops were not directly involved in election duties, they were strategically positioned to provide security support before, during and after the electoral process.

The troops, operating under Operation ATILEHIN ALAFIYA II, carried out patrols, monitored key locations and maintained security presence across parts of Cotonou and surrounding areas.

According to the statement, the operation later extended to the successful provision of security during the inauguration ceremony of Benin Republic President, Romuald Wadagni.

The Nigerian Army said personnel were deployed to strategic locations, including the main inauguration venue and other designated points, while mobile patrol teams conducted area domination operations to strengthen security.

“The successful execution of this mission underscores the capacity of the Nigerian Army for rapid deployment, operational professionalism and its readiness to support regional peace initiatives,” the statement said.

The Army added that the mission reflected Nigeria’s commitment to democratic governance, regional peace and the objectives of the Economic Community of West African States, ECOWAS.
