The Bundesliga champions needed two late goals from Luis Diaz and Michael Olise to beat Madrid 4-3 at the Allianz Arena on Wednesday night.
Kompany’s men had won 2-1 at Bernabeu and qualified for the semi-final where they will take on Paris Saint-Germain.
“It was a very emotional game. We had a lot of possession and always felt we could score. But Real Madrid remains Real Madrid,” Kompany told reporters.
“They have very quick players and are always a threat.
“The boys were mentally strong today, recovering from setbacks.
“The fans helped us as well. We stayed calm and always felt that our moment would come. The boys deserved this win.”
