Argentina head coach, Lionel Scaloni, has responded to the speculation regarding the future of Lionel Messi and Emiliano Martinez with the national team following the loss to Spain in the 2026 World Cup final.

The Albiceleste came very close to achieving their dream of defending the title, reaching back-to-back finals this year.

Regrettably, they suffered a 1-0 defeat against a superior Spanish team, which effectively dashed their hopes.

In the wake of this disappointment, rumors began to circulate about the future of 39-year-old Lionel Messi and goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez within the squad.

Lionel Scaloni was asked about this matter during an interview with TyC Sports upon his return to Argentina, and he addressed the speculation, stating (via GOAL):

“After a tournament like this, with normal occurrences, I believe one begins to reconsider certain aspects.”

“We are here until December. The most significant aspect of this situation is how events unfolded. The public understood that the team gave their all, and what happens next… the most important thing is always Argentina. Regardless of whether I remain in my position or not, the most important thing is this unity, this bond,” the coach added.

Lionel Messi and Emiliano Martinez have been pivotal to Argentina’s achievements in recent years.

The forward contributed seven goals and three assists, while the goalkeeper made crucial saves.
