EPL: ‘It amazes me’ – Di Matteo names Chelsea player that has surprised him

Former Chelsea manager, Roberto Di Matteo, has said that Brazilian winger, Willian Estevao has been a ‘surprise’ to him.

Chelsea appear to be on the right track at the moment after a shaky start to the campaign.

The Blues have been defeated just once in their last 11 games, defeating the likes of Liverpool, Tottenham and Barcelona.

Chelsea could reclaim the second place in the table with a win over the Sunday opponent and Premier League leaders, Arsenal.

Manchester City climbed to the second spot on Saturday after a 3-2 win over Leeds United.

Victory at Stamford Bridge would see Enzo Maresca’s side close to gap to just three points.

Estevao was signed by Chelsea for £51million in the summer of 2023 and he joined the club after the Fifa Club World Cup in the United States.

Di Matteo admits he has been ‘surprised’ at how quickly Estevao has adjusted to life in England.

“It amazes me how mature he is for his age,” the former midfielder told Sky Sports ahead of Chelsea’s Premier League battle with Arsenal at Stamford Bridge on Sunday.

Di Matteo said he did not expect the Brazilian to settle so fast in a new country “and start off so well, that did surprise me a little bit.

“But you meet him and he’s a really humble guy. He is an exciting player. When I first watched him in the States I was like, ‘wow, this is a special talent’. He’s slowly developing because let’s not forget, he’s still very, very young.”
