World Cup 2026: ‘Forget Messi’ – John Terry names favourite country to win trophy

Former England captain, John Terry, has identified France as his top pick to win the World Cup, although he acknowledges being ‘really impressed’ by Argentina.

Didier Deschamps’ team topped Group I with decisive victories against Senegal, Iraq, and Norway, and they are set to face Sweden in the round of 32.

Meanwhile, England also secured the top position in Group L, achieving a 2-0 victory over Panama on Saturday night, and Thomas Tuchel’s squad will encounter DR Congo in their opening match of the knockout stage.

Argentina has also advanced to the round of 32, with Lionel Messi netting a hat-trick and a brace to lead the World Cup champions to triumphs over Algeria and Austria.

When asked to share his favorite for the World Cup this summer, Terry stated on Piers Morgan Uncensored, “I’m still leaning towards France as the best team I’ve observed, particularly regarding their attacking capabilities and the threats they present.

“I still believe England has a strong chance. I realize I received some criticism for selecting France and England as my top two teams.

“I must admit, I’ve been quite impressed with Argentina.

“Forget Messi and the goals he’s scoring; when it comes to their pressing, observe how Argentina reacts when they lose possession. They immediately counter-press and reclaim the ball high up the pitch.

“I think this is due to the understanding that they don’t have 11 players who will track back, with Messi being one of those. They recover the ball quickly, pass it to him, and he can create moments of brilliance.

“I must say I’ve been very impressed with them [Argentina], but France remains my top choice.”
