Peter Obi reacts to death of ex-PDP chairman, Bamanga Tukur

The presidential candidate of the Nigerian Democratic Congress, NDC, Peter Obi, has mourned the death of former National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Alhaji Bamanga Tukur.

Tukur, a former Governor of Gongola State and veteran business leader, died on Saturday, September 12, 2026, at the age of 90.

His death was announced in a statement issued by his family and signed by his son, Awwal D. Tukur.

Reacting to the incident, Obi described the deceased as a distinguished statesman whose decades of service to Nigeria had left an enduring legacy.

Obi said, “I just read the sad news of the death of Alhaji Bamanga Tukur, CON, a distinguished statesman, former Governor of Gongola State, and veteran business leader.

“His decades of service to our nation, both in the public sector and through his extensive contributions to African commerce, have left an enduring legacy.

“My heart goes out to the Tukur family, the government, and the people of Adamawa State during this time of grief.

“May Almighty Allah forgive his shortcomings, grant him Al-Jannah Firdaus, and give his loved ones the strength to bear this great loss.”
