Pope Francis, the first Latin American leader of the Roman Catholic Church, has died, the Vatican said in a video statement on Monday, 21 April

According to Reuters, he was 88 and had survived a serious bout of double pneumonia.

"Dear brothers and sisters, it is with profound sadness I must announce the death of our Holy Father Francis.

"At 7.35am (1.35pm Malaysian time) this morning, the Bishop of Rome, Francis, returned to the house of the Father," Vatican News quoted Cardinal Kevin Farrell, a close advisor to the pope, as saying.

Francis' death comes a day after the pope had made his first prolonged public appearance at Saint Peter's Basilica in the Vatican for the Easter celebration

He emerged on Easter Sunday, 20 April, to bless thousands of people in Saint Peter's Square, reported CNN.

A day before that, he held a brief meeting with US vice president JD Vance.

He was discharged less than a month ago on 23 March after receiving treatment in a hospital for 38 days for pneumonia.
