Live: Democrats seize House and Senate as Trump insists he would have won ‘in a landslide’

by · TheJournal.ie

DEMOCRATS HAVE WON control of both the House of Representatives and the Senate in the US midterm elections, according to projections, dealing a major blow to Donald Trump.

The party has taken Republican-held Senate seats in states including Texas, Ohio and North Carolina, and will control both chambers of Congress when the new term begins in January.

Trump sought to distance himself from the defeats, writing on Truth Social: “I wasn’t on the Ballot and if I was, we would have won IN A LANDSLIDE!”

Counting continues, with the final size of the Democratic majorities still to be determined.

What are we still waiting on?

Control of Congress has been called, but there’s still plenty to settle.

Michigan’s Senate race remains one to watch, with Democrat Abdul El-Sayed facing Republican Mike Rogers.

Senate contests in Alaska and Nebraska also remain unresolved.

In the House, dozens of races are still outstanding, including contests in California, Arizona and Washington.

We know which way the tide has turned, but those seats will help determine how comfortable the Democratic majority will be.

Latest results

Here’s the latest picture from ABC News, whose results pages were updated at around 6am Irish time:

  • House of Representatives: Democrats 231 seats, Republicans 168, with 36 still outstanding. A majority requires 218.
  • Senate: Democrats and their aligned independents account for 53 seats, against 42 Republicans, with five still unresolved.

Those aren’t final totals, but Democrats have already secured enough seats to control both chambers.

Among the Senate gains for Democrats are Texas, North Carolina, South Carolina, Ohio, Kansas, Iowa and Maine, many of which strongly supported Trump in the 2024 presidential election.
