A 49-YEAR-OLD MAN has appeared before a special sitting of Killarney District Court on Sunday night, charged with the murder of one man and the serious assault of another at an international protection (IPAS) centre in Tralee.
The man, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was charged with the murder of a 54-year-old man at Ballymullen Barracks, Tralee, on 31 October. The charge is contrary to common law.
He is further charged with the assault of a 32-year-old man causing him harm on the same date in the same place. The charge is contrary to Section 3 of the Non-Fatal-Offences against the Person Act.
The special court in Killarney got underway shortly after 6.30pm. A Somali interpreter was sworn in at the outset. Arresting garda Detective Sergeant James Hurley gave evidence of arrest, charge and caution in Tralee Garda Station on Sunday afternoon.

The accused was charged and cautioned in the presence of his solicitor and he made no reply to either charge, Hurley said.
Court presenter Inspector Tim O’Keeffe said the State’s application was to remand him in custody to appear by video link at Tralee District Court next Wednesday.
Solicitor Nuala Liston for the accused said her client had received medical attention and had been in hospital. Judge Joanne Carroll inquired if he was on prescribed medication and the accused confirmed to his interpreter he was not.
The judge directed the prison governor to medically assess the 49-year-old on arrival.
Carroll remanded him in custody to appear in Tralee District Court via video link on 4 November next and ordered that a Somali interpreter be present.
