You can finally stop asking for Nintendo Switch 2 upgrades of the Xenoblade Chronicles series, because Nintendo has announced that Xenoblade Chronicle Definitive Edition, Xenoblade Chronicles 2 and Xenoblade Chronicles 3 are all getting Switch 2 upgrades this year!

Here are all the release dates:

  • Xenoblade Chronicle Definitive Edition – digital version and upgrade pack today, physical version 30th July
  • Xenoblade Chronicles 2 – digital version and upgrade pack 30th July, physical version 1st October
  • Xenoblade Chronicles 3 – digital, physical and upgrade pack 3rd December

All games promise 4K and 60fps docked and 1080p and 60fps in handheld, though we hope that it’s a better upscaler than was used for Chronicles X.

With Chronicles X having had a Switch 2 upgrade (for better or for worse) this means that all games in the popular RPG series will have been upgraded for the latest generation.

There’s no word just this second on pricing, which we’ll have to dig out after the show, but we anticipate this to be in-line with the relatively small upgrade fee for Chronicles X – $5 / £4.19.

The first game will have a faster mode of vehicle-based travel, new equipment designs and voiced Heart-to-Heart conversations. Chronicles 2 will have new action battles with the ability to control squads of Blades, new rare Blade an Blade Quests and new equipment designs for Pyra and Mythra. Chronicles 3 will have a new horde-based mode to fight off waves of enemies from the top-down, new Hero and Hero Quest, and newly voiced event scenes.

Oh, and there’s also the announcement of a brand new Xenoblade game, Xenoblade Genesis!

This is all great news for Xenoblade heads, given how the series has often pushed the hardware it runs on very hard. Xenoblade Chronicles 2 has historically been the worst of the bunch on original Switch, with the sequel Chronicles 3 featuring better use of dynamic resolution and upscaling techniques.

All these games have benefitted from being able to run in backwards compatibility on Switch 2, and more recently with the Handheld Boost Mode to raise the base resolution, but native ports – so long as Monolith don’t mess up the upscaling again – will be great.
