Kejriwal writes to PM proposing housing scheme for retired govt. employees
by The Hindu Bureau · The HinduAam Aadmi Party (AAP) chief Arvind Kejriwal on Sunday proposed a housing project for retired government employees, particularly sanitation workers, and said he had written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi asking for land at concessional rates for the scheme.
Addressing a press conference, Mr. Kejriwal said the AAP government would construct an affordable housing unit, and house owners could pay through instalments deducted from their salaries. “By the time they [government employees retire], they would have a home to call their own,” he said.
Mr. Kejriwal said the scheme would be first launched as a pilot project for employees of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi and New Delhi Municipal Council before being extended to all government employees.
The AAP chief is contesting the Delhi Assembly election from his home turf – New Delhi constituency.
He said that while campaigning, several Safai Karamcharis approached him, complaining that after retirement, they feel hopeless and struggle to find a roof.
Sources said that since land is controlled by the Central government in Delhi, it was necessary to partner with the Centre for the scheme.
It comes at a time when the BJP, too, is pushing for housing for poor with Mr. Modi inaugurating flats built for slum dwellers under the in-situ rehabilitation scheme just days before the poll announcement.
In his letter to the Prime Minister, Mr. Kejriwal wrote, “These [Safai Karamcharis] workers form the backbone of the city’s sanitation system. During their employment, they reside in government-provided accommodations. However, post-retirement, they are required to vacate these homes, and they are unable to purchase their own homes.” “I am confident that you will agree with this proposal and promptly devise an action plan to implement it,” he added.
