Wayanad DCC treasurer death: Court instructs police not to arrest Kerala MLA I.C. Balakrishnan till Jan 15

Court gives oral instruction on MLA's plea for anticipatory bail in the case

The Wayanad Principal Session’s Court in Kerala on Friday (January 10, 2025) instructed the police not to arrest I.C. Balakrishnan, MLA, and N.D. Appachan, president of Wayanad District Congress Committee (DCC), in connection with the recent death by suicide of former DCC treasurer N.M. Vijayan and his son.

The court gave the oral instruction considering the anticipatory bail plea of the duo. The police have been asked to withhold the arrest till January 15 and to produce the case diary in the court.

The MLA and the DCC president, besides another congress leader K.K. Gopinath, have been booked on charges of abetment to suicide. While the first two approached the sessions court for anticipatory bail, Mr. Gopinath approached the Kerala High Court. All three leaders are absconding too.

In his suicide note, Vijayan had incriminated the trio. The note said that Vijayan had taken bribe for appointment to the Cooperative Urban Bank in Sulthan Bathery following the orders of Mr. Balakrishnan and Mr. Appachan and that the leadership of the Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) was aware of the deal.

Detailed hearing on Jan 15

The anticipatory bail will be taken up for detailed hearing on January 15.
