by The Hindu Bureau · The HinduAll India Jamiyyathul Ulama general secretary Kanthapuram A.P. Aboobacker Musliar credited his interventions through Yemeni scholars for securing a stay on Malayali nurse Nimisha Priya’s execution in Yemen.
Addressing the media at Karanthur, near Kozhikode, on Tuesday, Mr. Aboobacker Musliar said that he successfully appealed to Yemeni scholars to intervene in Nimisha Priya’s case considering the importance to saving a human life.
“We have just received official confirmation from the Yemeni authorities that Nimisha Priya’s execution has been stayed based on our request. Let us all pray for her safe release,” he said.
According to Mr. Aboobacker Musliar, Chandy Oommen, MLA, has assured that blood money would be provided if the family of the victim, Talal Abdo Mahdi, agreed to grant clemency and accept the compensation.
Mr. Aboobacker Musliar stated that he had kept the Central government informed about his efforts to save Nimisha Priya. “We wrote to the Prime Minister’s Office explaining our initiatives,” he said.
He asserted that his intervention in the case was driven solely by humanitarian concerns. “We never discriminate based on religion or faith in matters affecting the people in general. There is no consideration of Hindu, Muslim or Christian. We stand for humanity,” said.
The veteran Islamic scholar pointed out that while the decision to punish or pardon ultimately rests with the authorities, the prospect of a foreign execution raises various humanitarian concerns, particularly for the family of the condemned individual, who would be cut off from any further contact or communication with their loved ones.
He expressed hope that Talal Mahdi’s family would consider granting clemency and accept the blood money, paving the way for Nimisha Priya’s safe release.
When asked about the delays and interruptions in discussions with the family, Mr. Aboobacker Musliar said: “This is not a subject that can be decided in two minutes. Naturally, it took a longer time and went through several phases.”
