Two militants killed in Army’s anti-militancy operation in Kupwara

The Army said it has discovered “warlike stores” from the encounter zone, which is still being searched

Two unidentified militants were killed in an anti-militancy operation of the Army in north Kashmir’s Kupwara on Saturday (October 5, 2024).

An Army spokesman said the two terrorists were eliminated by the security forces in an ongoing operation, called Gugaldhar, in Kupwara “War-like stores have been recovered,” the Army said.

He said a search of the area was underway and the operation was in progress. “A joint operation by the Indian Army and J&K Police was launched on October 04 based on intelligence about an infiltration attempt. Alert troops spotted suspicious activity and challenged, leading to exchange of firing with terrorists. Vigilant troops carried out effective fire,” the Army said.

Meanwhile, Lt. Gen. Prashant Srivastava took over the command of strategic Chinar Corps Commander. He previously commanded the Counter Insurgency Force (Victor) in south Kashmir.

An Army spokesman said the new Chinar Corps commander reaffirmed his commitment towards synergy in thoughts and action with civil administration, society and the citizens to promote peace and prosperity in the Kashmir Valley.

“Integrated efforts of the civil society and the security forces is the way forward to dismantle the terror infrastructure and nefarious designs of our adversary. Successful conduct of various key events, improved security parameters and palpable enthusiasm are a testament of the will of the populace towards growth, development and stable security situation in the Valley. I called upon civil society to propel Kashmir towards a future defined by peace, prosperity and development along with efforts of the security forces,” Lt. Gen. Srivastava said. 

Lt. Gen. Srivastava took over the reins from Lt. Gen. Rajiv Ghai, who served the Chinar Corps for the last 16 months. 

“Today, the region stands at the doors of a new dawn. Various programmes to reach out to the Kashmir people were notable during this time and the outgoing Corps Commander will be remembered for his humane and friendly approach. He now moves to Army Headquarters where he will assume the appointment of the Director General of Military Operations. Lieutenant General Ghai extended his greetings to the people of Kashmir and wished them the very best for a bright and promising Future,” the Army said.
