IAS officer who carried out extensive checks on Hyderabad’s restaurants is now GHMC commissioner
by The Hindu Bureau · The HinduStomach churning unhygienic conditions at various restaurants and food outlets across Hyderabad and other parts of Telangana continue to be widely discussed. The IAS officer, R.V. Karnan, who carried out widely publicised extensive checks was transferred to the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC). He was one among the several IAS officers reshuffled by the State government on Sunday (April 27, 2025).
Mr. Karnan was the commissioner of the State Food Safety department - which comes under the Health and Family Welfare department. He was the director of the latter too. From January to November 2024, the Food Safety department has conducted 4,652 inspections across upscale pubs, restaurants, ice cream parlours, eCommerce dark stores and other establishments in Hyderabad. The department on its X handle regularly posted details of the checks and violations detected.
He is now posted as commissioner of Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC). Apart from the Town Planning, Urban Biodiversity, Property tax, Entomology wing and others, the corporation has a Food Safety Wing too.
S. Sangeeta Satyanarayan was posted as the director of the Health and Family Welfare department.
