Police step up vigil against rooster fights, gambling in Chittoor district
by The Hindu Bureau · The HinduThe Chittoor district police issued a stern warning against gambling activities, including rooster fights, during the Sankranti festival.
Speaking to the media here on Sunday, Superintendent of Police (SP) V.N. Manikanta Chandolu said that strict legal action will be taken against individuals or groups involved in organising, participating, or facilitating such activities.
The SP said that Sankranti is a festival symbolising tradition and family unity, and should not be marred by unsocial practices like gambling. “These activities not only harm our cultural and social fabric but also destroy families and the lives of youth. Young people must refrain from such acts that lead to legal troubles and long-term consequences,” he said.
Highlighting the risks of gambling, the SP noted that addiction to such practices often results in financial ruin and legal complications, adversely impacting career prospects, including job and passport applications.
To ensure a peaceful celebration, the Chittoor police intensified surveillance and enforcement measures across towns, villages, and suburban areas. Mr. Chandolu called on the public to cooperate in eradicating such unsocial activities and encouraged residents to report incidents of gambling or rooster fights by dialling 100/112 and 9440900005 via WhatsApp.
“The identity of informants will be kept confidential. Public cooperation is vital in building a safer and harmonious society,” the SP assured.
