'I could' - Ruben Amorim has dropped two Man United transfer hints amid Viktor Gyokeres admission

by · Manchester Evening News

Manchester United are bound to be linked with several Sporting CP stars over the forthcoming transfer windows given Ruben Amorim's connection.

Viktor Gyokeres has been the name most touted with a move considering his red-hot scoring run over these past two seasons. After netting 43 goals in 50 matches last season, the Swede has tallied 23 strikes in 18 matches so far this term, three of which came against Manchester City in a devastating Champions League victory.

However, the chances of the 26-year-old making a switch to Old Trafford in January look non-existent. Amorim has already addressed whether he would move for Gyokeres this winter, once settled in at United.

"I will not sign any Sporting player at Man United in January," he stated this month, before adding: "What happens in the summer I don't know. Sporting players are good players. We will see what happens..."

But what about Gyokeres specifically? "Gyokeres costs €100million [£83m] and it's a lot," Amorim pointed out.

United might be set for yet another quiet January, after a £100m net spend over the summer, with compensation fees also paid out for sporting director Dan Ashworth, technical director Jason Wilcox and new coach Amorim. Erik ten Hag was also due around £17m in sacking compensation.

So a mid-season mass spend looks quite unlikely. But Amorim's comments do leave the door open for a potential summer approach.

The Manchester Evening News understands United are tracking 18-year-old Sporting CP winger, Geovany Quenda, after an impressive rise in Lisbon. Meanwhile, Amorim shared his admiration of teammate Pedro Goncalves prior to his arrival in Manchester, admitting he could "take him anywhere".

The left flanker has tallied 11 goal contributions (five goals six assists) in 12 matches so far this season after notching 18 goals and 17 assists in 49 games during last term’s title-winning campaign.

"He can play for any team in the world and with any player, because he's a great player. I could take him anywhere," lauded Amorim.

"He is very funny - which improves the personal relationship. But he is also very intelligent, but he also has to focus on Sporting because we have to be champions this year. But he could play in any team in the world."
