Drivers warned of 'significant risk' from snow after 'severe weather alert' issued for M62 and M56

Drivers have been put on high alert this morning after National Highways issued a amber severe snow warning across Greater Manchester and the North West.

Woodhead Pass between Manchester and Sheffield has already been closed following overnight snow and warnings are also in place on the M62 between Rochdale and Huddersfield and on parts of the M56 near Manchester Airport.

Drivers are being urged to take extra care and avoid the affected areas if possible.

The alert says: "This National Highways severe weather alert for snow (Amber status)... denotes that there is a significant risk to vehicles using the Strategic Road Network (SRN). National Highways, in conjunction with the Met Office are strongly advising that travel in these areas is likely to be extended or even disrupted.

"Road users should heed messages on the overhead signs and listen for radio updates. Further information can be found by visiting Traffic England or calling the National Highways Information Line on 0300 123 5000. Road users are advised to take extra care and avoid, if at all possible, these areas during the Severe Weather Alert."
