Bruno Fernandes sends clear two-word Amad message after Man United masterclass vs Southampton

by · Manchester Evening News

Amad has continued to receive plenty of plaudits after single-handedly dragging Manchester United to a 3-1 victory over Southampton in Premier League action. Ruben Amorim's side looked set for a shock home defeat to a team without a win on their travels this season until Amad stepped up and scored a 12-minute hat-trick.

Following a poor opening 40 minutes, with several saves required from Andre Onana to keep the score level, the Saints found the breakthrough just before half time via Manuel Ugarte own goal from a corner; which was the first time they had scored from a set-piece this season.

Despite going behind, and Amorim making a change at the interval with Antony replacing Kobbie Mainoo, Southampton continued to dominate. Further substitutions arrived soon after though, with Joshua Zirkzee and Toby Collyer introduced for Ugarte and Rasmus Hojlund.

United began to take control of the game after those alterations but the threat of Kamaldeen Sulemana up against Leny Yoro, who had a particularly difficult night, remained. Antony and Bruno Fernandes both missed great chances from close-range before Amad showed great determination to equalise with eight minutes remaining.

The 22-year-old then netted the winner bang on the 90th minute mark after volleying home a superb pass from Christian Eriksen. Deep into added time, Amad completed his hat-trick after pouncing on a Southampton error in defence.

Unsurprisingly, the praise for his heroic display was strong with Joshua Zirkzee, Lisandro Martinez and Bruno Fernandes among those to speak highly of him after the game. Amorim was also asked about Amad, but he was keen to not get too carried away.

"He did a great job," he said in a press conference. "It's a great moment for a young kid to score a hat-trick for a club like this, but he needs to focus on the next match because this is already in the past."

Fernandes on the other hand, was eager to show his appreciation for Amad in response to United's social media post labelling him as the "hero". Via Instagram stories, Fernandes simply said: "Bravo piccolo [raised hands emoji] @amaddiallo19," which loosely translates to "well done, young man."

With United closing out the midweek action, the turnaround to their next game is short with just three days between the late win against Southampton and the clash against Brighton, who beat Ipswich on Thursday evening, back on home soil this Sunday.
