How strong the wind will get in Greater Manchester during Storm Éowyn
by Miranda Pell · Manchester Evening NewsStorm Éowyn is expected to batter the UK with winds of up to 90mph hitting some parts of the UK on Friday, January 24.
The Met Office has issued multiple weather warnings of varying severities including two rare 'danger to life' red warnings for wind, which cover Northern Ireland and areas in southern and central Scotland.
Elsewhere, parts of the Scottish highlands have been issued with a yellow warning for snow, while there are two amber wind warnings and warnings for heavy rain which could lead to flooding.
While not covered by the most severe red alert, Greater Manchester is expected to be hit by strong winds, which could cause some problems. The region is covered by an amber alert which warns that there is risk of power cuts, travel disruption, damage to buildings and homes and a risk of injury due to flying debris.
The Met Office said inland areas covered by the amber warning could see peak gusts of 60mph to 70mph fairly widely. Areas that are along the coast could see gusts of up to 90mph.
The latest weather maps show how strong the winds are likely to get in Greater Manchester. At midday on Friday, maximum gusts are expected to reach 54mph in Manchester, 56mph in Bolton and Wigan and 57mph in Rochdale.
Wind gusts in the 40s and 50s are likely to persist until the evening, before they will start to drop down to the mid-30s by 8pm.

The amber weather warning covering Greater Manchester comes into force at midnight and will remain in place until 11.59pm on Friday.
The Met Office categorises its weather warnings depending on the severity of the conditions. With a yellow weather warning, it is likely that the weather will cause some low level impacts, including some disruption to travel in a few places.
An amber warning means there is an increased likelihood of impacts from severe weather, and you should consider changing your plans to keep yourself and your property safe. This means there is the possibility of travel delays, road and rail closures, power cuts and the potential risk to life and property.
