Matheus Cunha 'hijack' explained as contract offer can scupper Man United transfer plan

by · Manchester Evening News

Manchester United's season is approaching its climax with plenty to still drive excitement. Ruben Amorim's side could yet finish as Europa League champions, qualify for the Champions League and springboard with glee into an extremely important summer.

The manager's first summer transfer window is expected to produce several huge changes to Man United's squad - one that has been caught lacking in the Premier League, sitting 15th, but has remained in crystal clear focus for European action.

Earning qualification for the Champions League will serve to attract a greater calibre of player next season, so in a way, the very future of the club is at stake in a single 90 minutes to come against Tottenham Hotspur later this month.

With that, MEN Sport rounds up the latest Man United news and transfer rumours heading into a weekend in which domestic football is still the focus, playing West Ham.

Matheus Cunha hijack

According to talkSPORT, Man United intend to move swiftly to secure Matheus Cunha's signing from Wolves, and at a surface level all would appear well as they also say Old Trafford is his preferred destination.

Though nothing is certain at this point, which is why they hint towards the possibility of a hijack from either Arsenal or Newcastle United.

Before the summer transfer window opens and the Brazilian is able to complete a £62.5m summer switch, they claim his representatives have meetings scheduled with the Premier League rivals.

The Manchester Evening News understands that Cunha is a priority target this summer, as is Ipswich Town striker Liam Delap.

MEN Sport says: Quick business is going to be of the essence if Man United are going to get back to a level they can be proud of, especially battling for strikers on the market as there are so few of quality and so many clubs looking for them. Beating rivals to signings such as Cunha will instil confidence and allow Amorim to build for a better future sooner, thus putting Man United in the best position possible to improve.

Vanja Milenkovic-Savic contract

Man United have been linked with replacing goalkeeper Andre Onana this summer as his performances have failed to inspire over a sustained period.

With that, Torino's Vanja Milenkovic-Savic is a rumoured target. The 28-year-old Serbian international previously signed at Old Trafford in 2014 but failed to gain a work permit, so was subsequently released in 2015 and he has gone on to forge a strong career in Italy.

But the recent suggestions that an English giant could come hunting for the No.1 has GOAL saying Torino have been put into 'panic', and are going to do all they can to tie their goalkeeper down to a new contract.

MEN Sport says: If this is a route Man United go down, wanting a new goalkeeper, 6'8" Milenkovic-Savic is certaintly a strong choice. Torino have every reason to be frightened over the prospect of losing such an important player, but it would be interesting to see if a second move to Old Trafford would work out this time. If not, there are a number of other exciting goalkeepers on the continent.
