'No one is safe' - Rio Ferdinand fires Manchester United warning after latest Ineos decision

by · Manchester Evening News

Former Manchester United centre-back Rio Ferdinand has insisted that nobody is safe at Old Trafford after Ineos chose to end Sir Alex Ferguson's ambassador role at the culmination of this season.

The Manchester Evening News reported on Tuesday that Ferguson would be stepping back from his role, which is said to earn him over £2million per season, next summer. It's believed that the legendary Scot was informed of that decision at the beginning of this week.

It's understood the matter was treated amicably and Ferguson was offered reassurances he's always welcome at Old Trafford. Since he retired back in 2013, Ferguson has been ever-present at United's home matches and he, also, regularly attends their away games, as well.

There's no indication at this stage whether Ferguson's departure as an ambassador will limit how often that he attends United games moving forward. Understandably, the impending exit of Ferguson has divided the fanbase and while the reasons of being in the interest of cost-saving make sense, some will likely feel uneasy of the optics on a such an eye-catching decision like this.

Reacting to the news on X (was Twitter), Ferdinand said he believed it was a sign of Ineos wanting to send a huge statement of intent to the remainder of the club. "If Sir Alex can be taken out, then NO ONE IS SAFE at Manchester United - anyone can get it now," he wrote.

"Ineos sending a message to ANYONE at the club?!?" Erik ten Hag's position at Old Trafford has been up in the air these past few weeks after a historically bad to start to the Premier League season.

So far, it seems he has managed to avoid the sack, though, albeit he's under huge pressure to defeat Brentford on Saturday afternoon when the Bees head to Old Trafford (3pm).
