'Happy' - Erik ten Hag gives update on Rasmus Hojlund ahead of Manchester United vs Porto

by · Manchester Evening News

Erik ten Hag is 'happy' to give Rasmus Hojlund his first start for Manchester United this season.

United must bounce back from their 3-0 hammering against Tottenham on Sunday and Ten Hag has made four changes, freshening up the starting team in midfield and attack.

Manuel Ugarte, Kobbie Mainoo, Alejandro Garnacho and Johsua Zirkee have come out of the XI and have been replaced by Casemiro, Christian Eriksen, Amad and Hojlund.

Mainoo travelled to Portugal after taking part in training on Wednesday morning but he hasn't been passed fit enough to make the bench. The youngster was substituted before half-time against Spurs with a minor issue and he is expected to be back in the squad against Aston Villa.

Ten Hag spoke ahead of kick-off against Porto and told MUTV: "First of all, we are happy to bring Rasmus Hojlund into the team and it's his first start of the season. He didn't have a pre-season.

"He worked so hard to come back. It was a pity, unfortunate he was not part of the squad for the first two months of the season, then also we have players like Antony and Alejandro Garnacho.

"We had three players who were doubts for the game, so Alejandro, Harry and Kobbie, and Kobbie didn't make it but the others are involved and can play a part in the game.

"We need a squad and there's a fight for places. Casemiro obviously didn't play the last couple of games but he was so good for us in many games so that's what I expect.

"Especially in a hostile environment like tonight, together with Christian Eriksen in the middle of the park, to be composed, to be organised and to lead the press is what we expect.

"It will be a great game, we know it's a hostile stadium and we love that ambience, so we have to enjoy it, go and enjoy the game, play what you see and act as a team with togetherness."
