Law's career was kickstarted at Huddersfield Town under future Liverpool manager Bill Shankly. His debut came on Christmas Ever, 1956, in a 2-1 win vs Notts County. Here he would first gain recognition from Matt Busby at Man United whilst Shankly would also hope to take him to Anfield one day, but it turned out both were unsuccessful... The first transfer of Law's career was to Man City in 1960 for a then-British record fee estimated to be £55,000. Perhaps his best day in his first stint with the club was also the most bizarre - a 1961 FA Cup tie vs Luton Town. He scored six goals only for the match to be abandoned, none of them count in the history books and then the replay saw City lose 3-1. He enjoyed his spell at Maine Road but often in relegation fights he sought a greater challenge, eventually leaving for Torino. (Image: Daily Mirror/Mirrorpix/Mirrorpix via Getty Images) 2 of 7
Law spent one season in Italy playing alongside fellow Brit Joe Baker, who made the move from Hibernian. Again, his switch came with a record £110,000 fee for a British player. He was voted the best non-Italian in Serie A's 1961/62 campaign but sought a move away. Torino were adamant to sell to Juventus, though Law and Busby got their wish years in the making in the end and on July 10, 1962, he was officially unveiled as a Man United player for a third British record fee of £115,000. A hugely successful 11 years at Man United would follow, winning six major honours plus the 1964 Ballon d'Or trophy. The poignant of those was the first of the club's three European Cups throughout history. Unfortunately Law missed the semi-final and final due to a knee injury, though pictured at the side of Busby here remained a key part of the squad. In 1973 he would depart a certified Old Trafford icon, managing 406 appearances with 237 goals. (Image: Getty Images/Hulton Archive) 4 of 7
