Viktor Gyokeres thinks two Man Utd stars could block him from joining Ruben Amorim
He's one of the most in-demand strikers in world football after starring for Ruben Amorim at Sporting CP, but Viktor Gyokeres may also have two players in his way at Manchester United
by Patrick Austen-Hardy, Maria Ortega · The MirrorViktor Gyokeres appeared to suggest Joshua Zirkzee and Rasmus Hojlund could prevent him from moving to Manchester United.
Now Ruben Amorim has officially taken up the reins at Old Trafford, the Swede has already been linked with a reunion with his former Sporting Lisbon boss. The ex-Coventry City striker has taken the world by storm at the Portuguese giants and was linked with a move to United when Amorim was still in situ at Sporting.
He was particularly lethal in Amorim's final home match in charge, which saw Sporting destroy Manchester City 4-1 in the Champions League. Now the 39-year-old manager has his feet firmly under the desk at Old Trafford, the rumour mill is spinning even faster. Yet, it appears the two incumbent forwards at United are on Gyokeres' mind.
In an interview with Fotbollskanlen, Gyokeres was asked if he could see himself at United. He replied: "They already have several forwards there, so we'll see."
He added: "But it's not something I'm thinking about. Obviously, I want to play the whole season with Sporting and I feel good there, I'm not in a hurry. We'll see when the time comes."
Zirkzee and Hojlund have both left plenty to be desired since their respective moves to the club. Hojlund had a mixed debut season, contributing 16 goals and two assists in 43 appearances in all competitions.
However, having arrived from Atalanta for a whopping £72 million, his maiden campaign could be described as underwhelming. Meanwhile, ZIrkzee has struggled since his £36.5m move from Bologna.
After netting a late winner in his debut against Fulham, Zirkzee has failed to get onto the scoresheet again. It's clear that fans and pundits alike are not convinced the Dutch international is the answer to United's striking questions.
Gyokeres has experience playing in England, albeit in the Championship with Coventry and Brighton & Hove Albion. His goal record and reputation has sky-rocketed since he moved to Portugal. This season, he has already helped himself to 23 goals and four assists in just 18 appearances in all competitions.
It's the kind of goal-scoring form which has driven Sporting to the top of the Primeira Liga and second in the Champions League table. Now the international break is over, all eyes will be on the Swede to see how he fares playing under new boss Joao Pereira.
However, he is still disappointed with Amorim's sudden departure. When asked about his former coach, he added: "It's very sad that Amorim is leaving, but of course we understand his decision. He meant a lot to me, as he gave me the opportunity and helped me grow a lot. Now we look forward to working with the new coach."
Amorim will take charge of his first match as United manager on Sunday evening, when the Red Devils travel to face Ipswich Town in the Premier League.
