Netflix has released the first images of an upcoming action thriller starring Tom Hardy coming to screens next year.

The Venom and Legend star leads what promises to be a heart-stopping thriller about a detective who takes on a dangerous mission to pull off a daring rescue.

Along the way he ventures deep into the criminal underworld and uncovers a vast conspiracy at the centre of his city.

Titled Havoc, the new movie is coming in 2025 and is being helmed by Gareth Evans, director of the acclaimed martial arts films The Raid and The Raid 2.

New images reveal Hardy’s character leaping into blistering action as well as a look at the film’s second lead, Shadow and Bone breakout Jessie Mei Li.

Also starring are Timothy Olyphant and Forest Whitaker, plus Justin Cornwell, Quelin Sepulveda and Luis Guzmán.

A synopsis reads: “After a drug deal gone wrong, a bruised detective must fight his way through a criminal underworld to rescue a politician's estranged son, while unravelling a deep web of corruption and conspiracy that ensnares his entire city.”

Filmmaker Evans’ The Raid films are widely considered some of the best martial arts spectacles of the 21st Century.

The Guardian called it “a stone-cold masterpiece”, “one of the best action flicks ever made” and claimed “in a little over a decade, The Raid has established itself as an action movie classic.”

While Empire said of the second flick: “There is an astonishing amount of violent action here, doled out in hearty portions and captured with such an unflinching gaze that even the strongest stomach might spasm.

“Legs snap. Throats and knives interact. Heads are pulped into sausage-meat. Evans is a director who never knowingly underkills.”

The franchise has also gained a loyal following amongst general audiences, with one Redditor describing the first as “my favourite action film”.

“The story flows really well. With sinister overtones, and things going from bad to worse, teetering between doom and victory,” they added.

“The fights are super human, making really good use of camera angles and top rate fight-o-graphy.”
