Mohamed Salah was left in tears as Liverpool crashed out of the Champions League on penalties.

Liverpool drew 1-1 with Paris Saint-Germain on aggregate after Harvey Elliott's winner in the first and Ousmane Dembele's goal at Anfield, but it was Luis Enrique's side who ultimately reached the quarter-finals after a dramatic shootout.

Darwin Nunez and Curtis Jones both saw their spot kicks saved by Gianluigi Donnarumma, while Vitinha, Goncalo Ramos, Dembele and Desire Doue scored all four of PSG's penalties. And Salah struggled to contain his emotions after Liverpool were knocked out, with the forward seen in tears.

The match could be Salah's last European appearance for Liverpool as he is out of contract in the summer and it remains to be seen whether he will sign an extension. Reds captain Virgil van Dijk is in the same boat as Salah and he was also hugely disappointed with the result.

"It was a very intense great game of football, I think to be part of it as well," Van Dijk told Amazon Prime. "It was totally there for Liverpool and what we showed in Paris and unfortunately were out on penalties and that is the reality.

"I think in the first half we created dangerous moments and they have the quality as well, and then it comes down to penalties. It's part of football, I said to the guys, obviously, you can be disappointed because we're out of the competition, but chin up and get ready for the next challenge, a beautiful one on the weekend.

"I think we were pretty good today as well, and you want to go as far as possible, but we knew when we drew PSG it was going to be very difficult. We saw in Paris when we struggled but we won, and today we saw a very good Liverpool side but we're out of the competition.

"Today from the first second and then extra time, when fatigue kicks in for both sides, it becomes more open but especially regular time, we showed a very good game. We can speak about the game for ages but we're out of the competition, that is the reality."

PSG will now face either Aston Villa or Club Brugge in the quarter-finals and Unai Emery's side are the favourites to to go through after they won the first leg of their last-16 clash 3-1 thanks to goals from Leon Bailey and Marco Asensio and an own goal from Brandon Mechele.
