Paul Scholes rips into Man Utd aces with Michael Carrick jibe minutes after Newcastle loss

After Michael Carrick suffered his first loss as Manchester United's interim manager, Paul Scholes wasted no time hitting out at the players

by · The Mirror

Paul Scholes laid into Manchester United's players and joked that Michael Carrick 'must be special' after their unbeaten run was ended by ten-man Newcastle United. Carrick, 44, has been close to faultless ever since he took over from Ruben Amorim at the start of the year.

However, he fell to his first loss as United interim boss at St. James' Park. He looked set to wrap up another victory when Newcastle midfielder Jacob Ramsey was controversially sent off on the stroke of half-time by Peter Bankes.

The ex-Aston Villa ace was judged to have dived by the referee, who gave him a second booking having already given him a yellow card earlier in the game. Anthony Gordon gave Eddie Howe's side the lead moments after, only for Casemiro to head home Bruno Fernandes' free-kick just before half-time.

Many would have expected the Red Devils to wrap up another victory in the second half. However, as the match entered its final minutes, William Osula cut inside and curled in a dramatic winner to secure a stunning victory for the Magpies.

After a disappointing loss, a furious Scholes hit out at the United players with a mocking remark about Carrick on social media. On his Instagram story, he wrote: "Michael has definitely got something special about him... cos Utd have been c*** last four games... night."

He also expressed some admiration for Newcastle midfielder Sandro Tonali by writing the Italian's surname alongside a love heart emoji on his post. Considering United had one extra player for more than half of the match, the defeat to Newcastle will be seen as a huge three points dropped.

The biggest positive for United this week is that the teams around them also dropped points. Liverpool were beaten by rock-bottom Wolverhampton Wanderers on March 3 while Aston Villa, who are level on points with United, were defeated 4-1 at home by Chelsea.

Another benefit for Carrick's side is that they have 11 days of rest before their potentially pivotal clash with Aston Villa on Sunday, March 15. However, this could not have been further from Carrick's mind, as was evident in his post-match interview.

A spiky Carrick said: "We're not happy with the way we played the game. The way it panned out, it was in our hands largely, but credit to Newcastle.

"We navigated to be in a position where we felt we should kick on. We didn't, really, so bitterly disappointed. I don't think it was the 10 men, we just didn't play good enough and we can't make excuses."

After the home clash against Villa, United travel to Bournemouth on March 20, just before the international break. Once everyone has returned from their international teams, United host Leeds United, travel to Chelsea and face Brentford at Old Trafford before the end of April.
