Anton sits down with Clarkson to try to win £1m for charity

Strictly's Anton Du Beke in jaw-dropping TV first on Millionaire as audience gobsmacked

The Strictly Come Dancing judge starts well alongside host Jeremy Clarkson but then gets stumped on a question which is dance related

Anton Du Beke will leave viewers stunned this weekend with one of the most extraordinary games in the history of the Who Wants To Be A Millionaire game show.

The Strictly Come Dancing judge sails through the first few rounds but then struggles initially with a question themed around dance and musicals which leaves him with a big dilemma and sees him risk losing thousands for his chosen charity The Sick Children's Trust. Host Jeremy Clarkson told the Mirror: "When that cropped up, I thought well ‘this was tailor made for you’ and then it wasn’t. It’s a bit like me not knowing a Nico Rosberg question."

A show source said what happened during and after the question - which was worth £32,000 - was unprecedented on the celebrity version of the series. They added: "Anton does something we have never seen before on the show and high stakes are involved. He seemed shocked at the end of his game and the studio audience were too." Viewers will have to tune in to see exactly what happens.

Anton's appearance on the hit ITV show is far from straight forward and his time in the hotseat is memorable

Clarkson, 64, introduces Anton, 58, to the show by saying he was "known for being paired with older celebrities who couldn't dance, so I'll be right at home with me".

But asked if this meant he might now return the favour and go onto Strictly, Clarkson said: "No. I loathe dancing, I truly loathe dancing. I have danced. But I will only dance to ‘Modern Love’ by David Bowie and only if I’ve had every single drop of alcohol in a place! So, it’s not actually dancing, it’s mostly not falling over is all I’m actually doing. People think I’m dancing but it isn’t – it’s just me trying to stay up!"

Anton's amazing game comes just a week after Sir Stephen Fry won £250,000 on Who Wants To Be A Millionaire? with Clarkson helping him on one question during a celebrity version of the series.

The ITV show, which was originally hosted by Chris Tarrant, introduced a lifeline called "ask the host" when it was revived in 2018 with Clarkson as the presenter.

Former QI host, actor and comedian Sir Stephen also consulted with Pointless star and author Richard Osman on the £500,000 question, by using his phone a friend lifeline.

For the half-a-million-pound question, Sir Stephen was asked what the longest gap was between the original version and the cover version of a song, but quiz host Osman failed to help him.

"I am delighted and I am not complaining at all," Sir Stephen said. "It was extremely good fun. The time goes so quickly."

On receiving help from host Clarkson, Sir Stephen said: "Jeremy is very encouraging, and he was great with the question that took me to a quarter of a million."

* Anton is on the Who Wants To Be A Millionaire Celebrity Special on Sunday night at 8pm on ITV and ITVX.
