Ant McPartlin on his life-changing health diagnosis after 'years of struggling'

I'm A Celebrity...Get Me Out Of Here! star Ant McPartlin revealed he was diagnosed with ADHD (attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder) in 2019 after a series of 'thorough tests'

Ant McPartlin has spoken candidly about his life-changing health diagnosis after admitting to 'years of struggling'.

The I'm A Celebrity...Get Me Out Of Here! star, 49, is one of the most successful presenters on TV, winning an array of awards with his best pal, Declan Donnelly.

However, off-screen Ant has been dealing with ADHD (attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder), which wasn't diagnosed until 2018 after his car crash when he was arrested for drink-driving.

Opening up about the condition, which can cause inattention, hyperactivity and impulsivity, he said: "I've got ADHD. I don't mind talking about that. I was so thoroughly examined and diagnosed, I found stuff out about me I hadn't addressed for years."

Ant told The Sun that his diagnosis immediately “made sense” because the condition can go hand-in-hand with alcohol problems. He explained: “There are a lot of links to alcohol-dependency, which I studied a lot when I was away.”

Adding that ADHD was actually a benefit in his line of work, he continued: "In my job, having what they call 'popcorn thinking' is good because it means you can jump from one thing to another. Professionally it's brilliant. Personally I'm all over the place." Giving his support to others with ADHD, he concluded: “There will be so many others who will be struggling and my heart goes out to them."

The dad-of-one is not the only star to go public with their ADHD diagnosis in recent years as I'm A Celeb winner Sam Thompson, Lily Allen, Sheridan Smith and Katie Price have all also opened up about struggling with the condition.

Thankfully, Ant now seems to be coping with his condition after marrying his wife, Anne-Marie, and welcoming their first child together, Wilder. Fans went wild when they saw snaps of the new dad holding his bundle of joy in Australia recently while he took a break from filming I'm A Celebrity.

The Byker Grove star, who has been married to Anne-Marie since 2021, announced the news he'd become a dad earlier this year, as he posted: “Welcome to the family, Wilder Patrick Mcpartlin. Born, 14/05/24 at 8.54 am. Baby is beautiful, Mummy’s a legend, sisters are over the moon. Dad’s a mess!” He shared the news alongside a snap of the baby cuddling up to him.

Ant and his sidekick Dec stunned fans earlier this year when they announced they were stepping down from their Saturday Night Take Away show to spend more time with their families. Ant said in Fault magazine at the time: "On a personal level, part of the reason we're pausing Takeaway is we need a break ourselves, and we need to spend some time with our family… We've both got children that we need to spend time with for a little bit. We need time to think and, and time to step back and look at the bigger picture and just see where we are now."
