Ruben Amorim reveals details of private Sir Jim Ratcliffe Man Utd meeting
Manchester United just about managed to get over the line against Southampton on Thursday evening and Ruben Amorim held talks with Red Devils owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe after the game
by Daniel Orme · The MirrorAmad not only saved Manchester United against Southampton - he also let Ruben Amorim off the hook with his boss.
The Ivorian winger netted a sensational late hat-trick to secure three points against the Saints. It had come after a display in which the Red Devils were dominated by the Premier League’s bottom club for large swathes.
United co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe was spotted looking particularly disgruntled during the game. But his mood will certainly have improved after seeing Amad plunder his treble - particularly just days after managing to tie the former Atalanta winger down to a new long-term contract.
Amorim was also thankful, having held a short meeting with Ratcliffe moments after the final whistle. Opening up on what was said between the two, the Portuguese coach hinted that it was a much smoother conversation than it otherwise would have been had United lost.
He said: “I had five minutes with him to talk about different things about the game. Was not a good game but in the end, the result helped the conversation.
“So we can do our job, it’s a really difficult moment but today was more important the win. I know the fans want to see so much better football than this, I want to see much better football than this but you need time.
“Like I said in the first days here, to win time, you need to win games. We did that today, not in a good fashion but we managed to win and we’re going to prepare for the next game.”

United are back in action this weekend against Brighton and they have a chance to make it back-to-back Premier League wins for the first time this season amid a promising run of form. Amorim’s side drew with Liverpool before seeing off Arsenal in the FA Cup, then beat Southampton.
Their next two games - first against Brighton and then Rangers - are both at Old Trafford, with Ratcliffe expected to attend both games. The INEOS owner shared his verdict on Amorim last month but warned fans that they cannot expect instant success under their new manager.
He said: “We have a fantastic coach. He is intelligent, thoughtful. We have a great chief executive in Omar. We’re on the way, but this won’t happen overnight. There are financial issues which we need to address because we’ve inherited a financial situation that only time will solve.”
