Tesco issues five-day warning about when refunds land in bank accounts

How you get your refund depends on how you paid for the item

Tesco has spelled out the rules when it comes to getting a refund. The superstore issued the update after a person got in touch asking about when they would get their refund.

They asked over X: "I got a refund onto my card in store on Friday but it’s not in my bank yet. Do you know how long it will take?"

Tesco apologised for the delay. They said "It can take 3-5 working days for the funds to appear back in your account, so you should see the refund by Friday."

Take note. How you receive your refund depends on how you paid for the product.

If you paid by credit or debit card, the Tesco website states: "Your money will go back onto the same card. Please allow 3-5 working days for the refund to show in your account."

If you paid using Clubcard vouchers, you will get the refund as the equivalent value in Clubcard points for online purchases. If you bought the item using a gift card or a money card, the amount will go back onto a Tesco gift card or money card.

Waiting a week to get your money back may seem a long time. However, other supermarkets warn their customers it can take several days to get a refund.

Morrisons says it can take between 7 and 10 days for the cash to appear in your account. They explain that the period runs "from the date we have processed the refund".

Sainsbury's cautions its shoppers that refunds for an item bought using a debit card "may take 5-7 days (including weekends and bank holidays)". Asda warns customers that your refund time "can vary depending on how you chose to return your items to us", advising to get in touch if you still haven't had your money back after 14 days.
