UK weather: Snow to batter country in -5C freeze later this month - here's where it will fall
Weather maps show snow falling in large parts of the UK later this month in an Arctic blast with cold air moving south and seeing temperatures dropping as low as -5C
by Tim Hanlon · The MirrorBrits are set to be hit by a -5C freeze later this month with several centimetres of snow forecast to fall.
The UK has had a wet but mild spell and that is set to continue for the rest of the week with southeasterly winds and a high pressure system over the country. Temperatures are set to reach the high teens in some areas over the coming days but the warm spell will not last and it will be markedly colder in mid-November according to weather maps.
And maps from WXCharts show that by November 22 the mercury is set to drop to -5C in central Scotland while it will also be below zero in parts of northwest England. The mildest parts of the country is the southeast but even here it will be in low single figures. While snow clouds are also set to move in from the Arctic by November 21 as a massive low system sits over the UK.
A snow chart has much of the country turning purple including parts of Scotland northern England, the Midlands, southwest England and Wales. The Met Office states for the period from November 20 to December 4: “A general trend towards more unsettled conditions for all parts seems more likely than not through this period.
"Initially, there is likely to be a northwest-southeast split, with more unsettled conditions towards the northwest whilst drier conditions persist towards the south and east. However, as we head into December, a more unsettled and mobile picture will probably develop across all parts. Temperatures will probably be close to or above average overall, although some colder interludes are possible, especially in the north.”
And temperatures are set to drop as soon as next week with plenty of cold nights in store with the mercury in the low single figures across large swathes of the country from Monday for several days.
The Met Office predicts for November 10-19 that it will gradually become more unsettled. It states: "A band of rain across western and northern parts of the UK will move steadily southeast during Sunday, the rain becoming increasingly light and patchy with time. Next week will see a good deal of dry, settled weather as high pressure builds across the UK.
"However, after a reasonably bright start, increasingly cloudy conditions are likely to develop, with patchy drizzle possible at times and also some fog patches, these slow to clear. After a windy spell across northwestern parts on Sunday, winds will become mainly light, but breezier around the periphery of the UK, especially in the north later. Temperatures will be near or a little above average overall, although some cold nights are possible. From mid-month, possibly turning a little more unsettled, more particularly towards the northwest."
