Jose Mourinho SENT OFF after furious outburst in Real Madrid v Benfica clash

Former Real Madrid manager Jose Mourinho locked horns with his old club in the Champions League on Tuesday night - but the Benfica boss ended the game in the stands

Jose Mourinho was sent off in the final minutes of Benfica's Champions League tie with his former club, Real Madrid, following an angry tirade on the touchline.

Mourinho was shown looking animated on the touchline after the Portuguese side won a free-kick in a dangerous area just outside the penalty area as they chased an equaliser in the final moments of the game.

Seconds later, the referee was shown coming to speak with Mourinho, who was shown a yellow card. A red followed seconds later as he continued shouting towards the officials in a furious outburst.

The game, which was won 1-0 courtesy of a stunning strike from Vinicius Junior, was ruined by the unwelcome scenes which followed the Brazilian's fine goal.

The Real Madrid attacker approached the referee angrily after an exchange with Benfica's Gianluca Prestianni following his celebrations. The game was then halted and the UEFA protocol for alleged racist abuse was followed.

Vinicius Jr subsequently left the pitch and the game was halted for 10 minutes as the referee attempted to regain order, with the player returning to the field after speaking with both managers and team-mates.

He was loudly jeered by the home fans when the game did resume, while further unsavoury scenes following in the final minutes.

Vinicius Jr and Trent Alexander-Arnold were both targeted by objects thrown from fans in the corner of the stadium as they waited to take a corner in stoppage time, with replays showing a drink striking the former on the shoulder.
