A US Army base is in lockdown following reports of an active shooter on site.

The incident is unfolding at Fort Stewart in Georgia with all gate entrances closed as police attempt to bring the situation under control. It is occurring at the 2nd Armoured Brigade area near the airfield on Old Sunbury Road. All on-base schools have been placed on lockdown, and ambulances are responding to the scene.

Witnesses on X have described multiple casualties and a heavy presence of military police and emergency responders. Officials have not yet confirmed the number of shooters involved or the circumstances leading to the fatalities.

Local schools also put in lockdown following incident at army base

Community Superintendent Brian Perry issued a statement to Kessler Elementary School, Murray Elementary School, and Diamond Elementary School near Fort Stewart saying they were in lockdown.

“Per DOD alert the commander of Fort Stewart has issued a lock down. Diamond, Kessler, and Murray Schools are all in a lock down at this time. There is no immediate threat to the schools at this time. We will send a message when an all clear is announced,” he said.

Army officials give 'lockdown' order at army base

"Lockdown your facility immediately, stay inside, close and lock all windows and doors. Keep telephone lines open and report accountability to your leadership," Army officials wrote on the Fort Stewart Hunter Army Airfield Facebook page.

Statement from army base over 'active shooter'

Fort Stewart Hunter Army Airfield states: "Fort Stewart is in a lockdown status due to an active shooter incident in the 2nd Armored Brigade Combat Team area. The installation was locked down at 11:04 a.m. and law enforcement is on the scene at the time.

"Casualties have been reported and the situation is ongoing. Follow our platforms for more information."
