Chelsea make decision on Evan Ferguson transfer as Brighton star moves closer to exit

Brighton striker Evan Ferguson could join another Premier League club before the transfer window shuts - and Chelsea have now joined the race for the Republic of Ireland star

by · The Mirror

Chelsea have joined the growing contingent of clubs tracking Evan Ferguson ahead of Monday's transfer deadline.

The Brighton striker, 20, is expected to be given the green light to move on before next week, although it remains to be seen if such a move will be permanent or a loan.

Chelsea, among others, are long-term admirers of Ferguson, who is widely regarded as one of the Premier League's top young strikers. He has found first-team opportunities hard to come by this season, though, after recovering from an ankle injury.

It is now understood that Brighton are ready to sell or loan Ferguson depending on what offers materialise between now and Monday night - and it seems Chelsea could be willing to join others at the table.

The Blues interest is confirmed by The Guardian, but it's outlined that is currently unclear whether or not they would be interested in a permanent deal or a temporary one.

Whoever does land Ferguson before the transfer window shuts on Monday night will have to beat off fierce competition from clubs in the Premier League and from further afield given the significant interest in the striker.

Arsenal and Tottenham have both been credited with an interest in the Republic of Ireland star, as have West Ham. In terms of European interest, Bayer Leverkusen were thought to be in pole position to sign Ferguson, although Al-Nassr's decision to bin off a move for Victor Boniface means their position on a deal for the Brighton man is now unclear.

Brighton boss Fabian Hurzeler opened the door for Ferguson to leave on loan earlier this month, although it has since emerged that the Seagulls would give consideration to selling their academy star for the right price.

"We will negotiate what is important for him, what is important for his development, where he can improve the best and then we will make the decision together," Hurzeler explained when he was quizzed on speculation over the striker's future.

"This decision should be what is best for the player and for the club. We sent (Facundo) Buonanotte, for example, to Leicester."
