Melania Trump has criticised Jill Biden after receiving a phone call from the First Lady following the first assassination attempt of her husband in July.

Donald Trump 's wife, who is set to become First Lady again in January, revealed Jill called her on July 13 after the former president - and now President-elect - survived an assassination attempt during a campaign rally near Butler, Pennsylvania. Trump and two other people were wounded - and one attendee was killed.

Gunman Thomas Matthew Crooks, who was armed with an AR-style rifle, was shot dead at the scene. After the incident, Jill called Melania and Joe Biden spoke to Trump - but the former and next First Lady questioned whether Jill's concern was genuine.

In an interview just before last week's election, Melania told French outlet Paris Match : "I do question, however, whether Jill's concern was genuine, as a few days prior she referred to my husband as 'evil' and a 'liar'. It was obvious that the onslaught of rhetoric from Democrat leaders and the mainstream media was so deeply embedded in our nation's consciousness it prompted an attempt to assassinate Donald."

Meanwhile, the incoming First Lady turned down a meeting with Jill at the White House - and blamed it on a "scheduling conflict." The meeting, which was scheduled for Wednesday at 11am, marks the beginning of a peaceful transition between the outgoing and incoming families.

A representative from Jill Biden's office said the Bidens had offered their congratulations to the Trumps, along with the traditional invitation for a White House visit, but Melania turned down the offer. "Mrs. Trump will not be attending today's meeting at the White House. Her husband's return to the Oval Office to commence the transition process is encouraging, and she wishes him great success," her office said in a post to X.

The snub was reportedly due to a scheduling conflict related to the release of Melania's newly released memoir. Joe Biden had invited the President-elect to the Oval Office to show there will be a peaceful transition of power - something thatDonald Trumprefused Biden in 2020 as he contested the election's result.

The President-elect's plane landed at Joint Base Andrews in Maryland on Wednesday morning and Trump arrived near the Capitol for a meeting with House Republicans as they prepare for a potentially unified Republican government and sweep of power. Back in Washington for the first time since his election victory, Trump said: "It's nice to win."
