Lee Carsley gives honest view on taking England job in future as Thomas Tuchel steps in
England have won promotion back to the top tier of the Nations League after Lee Carsley steered them to five wins out of six before handing over the reins to incoming successor Thomas Tuchel
by John Cross · The MirrorLee Carsley insists he has left England in great shape for incoming boss Thomas Tuchel.
England blitzed Republic of Ireland with five second-half goals with Harry Kane and four new goalscorers - Anthony Gordon, Jarrod Bowen, Conor Gallagher and Taylor Harwood-Bellis - all on target. It means England won their Nations League Group B2 and are promoted back among the big boys and Carsley will give Tuchel a full debrief before England’s new boss takes over on January 1.
Interim boss Carsley said: “There's a bit of relief, because we were expected to get promotion. I've found it challenging. But it was a strong performance. I'm trying to put together a debriefing. I'll put together a document and go meet him (Tuchel), and present him with what I think, and what we've found.
“Our job is to help him as much as we can. I'll look forward to meeting him in the next few weeks. He's an elite coach. The challenge now for the players is to be in the March squad, and a lot of them have enhanced their reputation. I'm proud for a lot of them.
“I wanted the England team to be exciting to watch and be attacking. And now we've seen it." Carsley did not rule out taking over the big job at some point in the future after he steps back into the under-21s now.
Carsley said: “It has given the staff and myself the confidence that we can do the job. That is the big thing. You always doubt yourself, whether you can do it or not. We often speak about there being a lot of England managers sat in the house picking the team and the squad.
“To have the responsibility to do that and the trust from my bosses has been a massive boost of confidence. The main thing is what we've done and that is promotion.”
FA chief executive Mark Bullingham paid tribute to Carsley and said: "Lee has achieved the main objective from the six fixtures this autumn, securing promotion back to the top tier of the Nations League.
"He has selected some exciting new players and will be providing Thomas Tuchel with a very detailed handover as they start work on our qualifying campaign for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The players have really enjoyed working with Lee and his team. They have made a real impact in their interim roles."
