Dame Maggie Smith has been honoured in heart-wrenching tributes from Harry Potter co-stars Emma Watson and Rupert Grint.

It was announced on Friday that Dame Maggie passed away in hospital at the age of 89. Tributes from friends and fans have been flooding in since.

Emma Watson, who played Hermione Granger in the Harry Potter Franchise shared her own sweet message after Maggie died. Sharing a behind-the-scenes photo of herself and Smith as they filmed a scene from Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows Part 2.

Emma Watson shared a tribute

The actress wrote: "When I was younger I had no idea of Maggie's legend - the woman I was fortunate enough to share space with. It is only as I've become an adult that I've come to appreciate that I shared the screen with a true definition of greatness."

She went on to add: "She was real, honest, funny and self-honouring. Maggie, there were a lot of male professors and by God you held your own. Thank you for all of your kindness. I'll miss you."

Meanwhile, Rupert Grint, who played Ron Weasley in the franchise, also shared his own message. Also posting a photo on set with Dame Maggie, he wrote: "Heartbroken to hear about Maggie. She was so special, always hilarious and always kind. I feel incredibly lucky to have shared a set with her and particularly lucky to have shared a dance. I’ll miss you Maggie. Sending all my love to her family. Rupert x"

Dame Maggie passed away on Friday morning. The Oscar-winning actress and Harry Potter legend passed away peacefully in hospital with her family by her side. Her family said that they are "devastated" by her loss as they went on to thank NHS staff at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital.

In a statement issued via their publicist, they said: "It is with great sadness we have to announce the death of Dame Maggie Smith. She passed away peacefully in hospital early this morning, Friday 27th September.

"An intensely private person, she was with friends and family at the end. She leaves two sons and five loving grandchildren who are devastated by the loss of their extraordinary mother and grandmother. We would like to take this opportunity to thank the wonderful staff at the Chelsea and Westminster Hospital for their care and unstinting kindness during her final days. We thank you for all your kind messages and support and ask that you respect our privacy at this time."

Dame Maggie won Academy Awards for her roles in 1969's The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie and 1978's California Suite. She was also Oscar nominated for 1965's Othello, 1972's Travels with My Aunt, 1985's Room With A View and 2001's Gosford Park.
