Mohamed Salah told Liverpool contract demands are 'not viable' as he nears exit

Mohamed Salah once again brought up the saga of expiring Liverpool contract while speaking to media with one ex-Reds star pinpointing the only reason he may depart the club next summer

Mohamed Salah's potential contract demands to extend his Liverpool career might not be viable.

That's according to former Reds midfielder Danny Murphy, who is confident Salah wants to remain at Liverpool but will walk anyway if he doesn't land a bumper new deal.

Salah's expiring contract has been a consistent topic of discussion this season, with the winger recently commenting on the situation following his match-winning performance in Liverpool's 3-2 win over Southampton.

The Egyptian superstar stunned the Reds fanbase by stating he's "more out than in" and claiming that the club's hierarchy has yet to table a formal offer to extend his contract.

His deal ends in the summer of 2025, alongside club captain Virgil van Dijk and vice-captain Trent Alexander-Arnold, spelling a potentially dangerous period for the club.

His comments drew the wrath of Jamie Carragher, who admitted on Monday Night Football that he was "very disappointed" with the winger for discussing negotiations in public just days before important clashes against Real Madrid and Manchester City.

Murphy has opened up on what he believes may be going on behind the scenes at Liverpool and why the club are yet to give the 32-year-old what he wants to stay.

Murphy said to BoyleSports: "We will know sooner rather than later what will happen with Mohamed Salah. He looks amazing physically and is as sharp as he's been in a long time.

"The way he lives his life, there is no reason he can't carry on the way he is for the next two or three seasons. The thing we don't know is the business side of things. We don't know whether is asking for three years or asking for more money, for example if he wants a four year deal and more money then it's not viable for the club."

While Murphy believes a deal will eventually be struck for Salah and Van Dijk to remain at Liverpool, he thinks Alexander-Arnold will depart his boyhood club amid reported interest in the England international from Real Madrid.

"The only reason he [Salah] won't stay is because the club don’t want to pay him the money he wants over the length of contract he wants, that's my reading of it. I think he does want to stay at the club and he's made up his mind. I think he will stay at the club and so will Virgil van Dijk, with Alexander-Arnold leaving."

Liverpool can continue their storming start to the season in their Champions League clash against Real Madrid on Wednesday before hosting Manchester City on Sunday. A win against Pep Guardiola's side will move them 11 points clear of the reigning champions.
