Conor Benn beats Chris Eubank Jr after perfect display in grudge rematch
Chris Eubank Jr and Conor Benn met for a second time at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, seven months after Eubank Jr won their thrilling first encounter
by Martin Domin · The MirrorConor Benn produced a punch-perfect display to outclass a faded Chris Eubank Jr and restore pride to his family's name.
Benn out-boxed his rival from the first bell to exact revenge following defeat in April's first instalment. And in doing so he succeeded where his dad Nigel had failed in his two fights with Chris Eubank Sr three decades ago.
Benn, 29, kept his emotions in check to dominate Eubank Jr who was a shadow of his former self. At 36, he will surely now consider hanging up his gloves.
But Benn, who won 119-107, 116-110 and 118-108 on the judges' scorecards, will now target a world title shot having exorcised the demons of this bitter three-year feud. The relaxed underdog had danced with his father on his march to the middle of the pitch.
Not even the nostalgic presence of Eubank Sr could prevent his son being loudly booed during his entrance. But, draped in a white fur robe, he did at least upstaged his rival when he was serenaded into battle by rapper 50 Cent.
Benn's anger from seven months ago appeared to have dissipated as he made a measured start, timing his jab in the first round.
Eubank Jr was warned after using his considerable size advantage to wrestle Benn to the canvas - but it was the younger man who had settled quickest.
Eubank Jr threatened to find his rhythm in the third round as he countered Benn against the ropes. But a right hand from Benn drew a nod of approval from his rival as the fight began to grow scrappy through four.
This was not the fire fight of the first clash but that suited Benn as he continued to stalk Eubank Jr around the ring. The older man's punches were lethargic as he reached the halfway stage comfortably behind.
Benn was growing in confidence and rocked Eubank Jr with a right hand before taunting him as the bell rang. Eubank Jr attempted to show some urgency in the eighth session but Benn had an answer to every attack.
Eubank Jr was warned by his corner he needed to win the last three rounds after a lacklustre ninth. But Father Time clearly had his number and the only question remaining was whether Benn could end the sequel early.
And he almost did just that in the final round, dropping Eubank Jr twice only for the beaten man to cling on to hear the final bell.
