Liverpool 'pick Mo Salah replacement' with contract situation up in the air

Mohamed Salah's Liverpool future is uncertain and the Egyptian now has less than a year on his contract as Arne Slot's side eye potential replacements for the Anfield superstar

Liverpool are set to target Borussia Dortmund star Karim Adeyemi amid the uncertainty around Mohamed Salah's Anfield future.

The Reds star bagged a goal and assist in the Champions League against Bologna in a record-setting display. The Egyptian has less than a year remaining on his contract with little sign of any progress on a new deal.

Arne Slot has an array of talent in his forward positions in Luis Diaz, Diogo Jota, Cody Gakpo and Darwin Nunez, but Salah remains a talismanic figure. In the case the 32-year-old does depart, finding a suitable replacement will be a priority.

Dortmund winger Adeyemi has enjoyed an electric start to the season and recorded five goals and five assists in just eight appearances. The Germany international bagged a hat-trick against Celtic earlier in the week and three years remaining on his contract.

Reports in Germany claim Liverpool would be willing to part ways with £42million for the 22-year-old. Adeyemi joined Dortmund in 2022 in a deal worth up to £32m.

The Reds may have to prove persuasive in any discussions with the young forward. Adeyemi has admitted he is enjoying life at the Westfalenstadion. He said: "I feel great here in Dortmund. I was already a big fan as a little boy!"

It remains to be seen when Salah's future will be resolved. The former Chelsea and Roma winger has previously been linked with a move to the Saudi Pro League.

Speaking last month, Salah revealed that the club had yet to discuss a new contract with him and as a result he was just focused on enjoying the final year of his contract.

"I just want to enjoy it and I don't want to think about it," he said. "I feel like I'm free to play football and then we'll see what happens next year.

"I was coming to the game today thinking it could be the last time. Nobody at the club has spoken to me yet about a new contract so I just play this last season and then see at the end of the season. It's not up to me but nobody talk to me about a contract with the club. We'll see."

Reds goalkeeper Alisson has admitted that Liverpool are lucky to have Salah. "He's a player that helps us a lot, sometimes it looks like he’s not in the game but suddenly a perfect touch, he puts the ball in the top corner," he said.

"That’s his quality, his strength as well. We are lucky to have him but we always have to highlight the hard work the team had and a lot to improve but good enough to win the game.”
