Netflix has unveiled the four stars portraying the iconic Shaggy, Daphne, Fred and Velma in its upcoming live-action Scooby-Doo series.

Billed as a modern reimagining of the hit franchise, Netflix's take on the story will explore the how the crime-solving gang first came together and formed Mystery Incorporated.

The as-yet untitled series will follow close friends Shaggy and Daphne as they spend one last summer together at camp. However, they soon find themselves caught up in a mystery involving a puppy who appears to have witnessed a supernatural murder.

Tonight (March 18), the leading cast members were revealed as Mckenna Grace (Scream 7), who will step into Daphne Blake's shoes; Tanner Hagen (The Pitt) as Shaggy Rogers; Abby Ryder Fortson (Are You There God? It's Me, Margaret) as Velma Dinkley and Maxwell Jenkins (Lost in Space) as Fred Jones.

In the wake of the cast reveal, a flurry of Netflix fans were quick to point out that the titular character, the Great Dane Scooby-Doo, was absent from the line-up. "Who's playing Scooby?" said one, as a second asked: "Where is the dog?"

Others were left simply impressed by the cast list, with one hopeful fan remarking: "That’s a strong line-up. Feels like they’ve gone for a younger, fresh cast, could bring a new vibe to Scooby-Doo if they get the chemistry right."

Meanwhile another, highlighting the physical similarities between the cast and original cartoon, commented: "No way… you guys actually brought the characters to life .. I'm shocked."

Another gushed: "Okay but can we talk about how this Scooby-Doo cast is actually perfect? Mckenna Grace is basically born to play Daphne Blake and Abby Ryder Fortson as Velma is a 10/10 choice."

They continued: "People are already complaining but this looks way better than that HBO Velma disaster we all try to forget. If Netflix sticks to the 'Scooby-Doo: Origins' vibe and keeps it spooky like Stranger Things this could be the best reboot in years."

Scooby-Doo, Where Are You! first hit screens in the late 1960s, following a group of teenagers who solve supernatural mysteries together with the help - and sometimes hindrance - of their Great Dane. It has since inspired multiple reboots and spin-offs, including the most recent, HBO's Velma, which began airing in 2023.

A release date for Netflix's Scooby Doo series is yet to be announced.
