The Villans have been pretty strong in Europe but it has come at a cost of their form domestically.
The last time they set foot in Jan Breydel Stadium was 118 days ago, when an unusual penalty situation led to their defeat. Emiliano Martinez, the goalkeeper, slightly moved the ball out of the six-yard box, and Tyrone Mings, a defender, picked it up under the impression that the goal-kick hadn't been executed. Consequently, Hans Vanaken scored a penalty kick, securing a crucial 1-0 win for his team and halting Villa's three-game winning streak in the Champions League.
However, Emery and his team are optimistic about turning the tables this time around as they aim to enter the quarterfinals of Europe's premier club competition for the first time since 1983.
In the initial group league phase, Villa performed commendably, securing an eighth-place finish. Meanwhile, Brugge managed to progress to the playoffs after finishing 24th. In other news, Villa has advanced to the FA Cup quarter-finals and is set to face Preston, the only remaining Championship club in the tournament.
Despite these victories, consistency remains a challenge for Emery's team. They have had impressive wins against Tottenham and Chelsea recently and managed a commendable draw against top-tier Liverpool. However, they haven't been able to defeat Ipswich Town at home despite Ipswich being down to 10 men and suffered a heavy 4-1 loss against Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park.
Interestingly, Club Brugge has only managed one win in their last 16 matches against English teams (D3 L12), conceding an alarming 42 goals during these games. Astonishingly, their sole victory was against Aston Villa with a score of 1-0 in this season's league phase.
